gamecocks

ready to fight

As many of you already know i am currently doing a documentary for school. This documentary is on cockfighting. It started out as a joke, i mean most people think it's illeagal which it is in all but two states in america (new mexico and louisiana) After much research i found a breeder in carencrow that was more than happy to give us a tour and interview. It's amazing how much time and money these breeders put into razing their roosters. I talked to a man who told us that he put two kids through college solely on breeding and selling roosters. It's amazing how ignorant i was about this underground sport that is huge in louisiana.
Saturday was the night, after much research and years of training i, with two friends, went to my first fight. I didn't exactly fit in with the crowd there but it wasn't that uncomfortable at first. Sure we got some dirty looks when they saw our camera but the owner okayed it as long as we didn't film and blood, weapons, or fights. Before hand we interviewed a 15 year old who had roosters fighting that night and we got some good shots of the ring before.
When the fights started i was shocked. It was so bloody and seemed unorganized but the longer i watched the more i realized how much was put into a fight. The people around me were busy gambling and shouting in fact there was a 2 year old child holding a dollar shouting "10 on blue" the whole time. As inhumane as it may have seemed i really didn't think it was too bad.

i bet that was pretty bizarre yet interesting. You probably didn't think it was too bad because you weren't the rooster!! so in the end, does one of them die? if so, do they eat it?
